WMO warns of the dangers of heatwaves
In some areas, night-time temperatures reach 30°C this week; danger to human health are heart attacks and death as the body temperature does not drop.
The World Meteorological Organization, WMO, has reported that the heat wave in the northern hemisphere it can raise temperatures above 40°C in areas such as North America, Asia, North Africa and the Mediterranean.

WMO Senior Extreme Heat Advisor John Nairn warned that the situation will last several days this week. In some areas, midnight temperatures can hover in the low 30s, which is a cause for great concern.
Over 60,000 deaths in 2022 due to heatwaves
He told reporters in Geneva that the high temperatures at night are especially dangerous for human health because the body is unable to recover from continuous heat. This would lead to a possible increase in cases of heart attack and even death.
The United Nations agency recalls that the European maximum was 48.8º C, in Sicily, in August 2021. The world record is 56.7º C, in Death Valley, California, recorded in July 1913.
Last year, more than 60,000 people died in Europe from heatwaves.
Temperatures are rising in the southern United States, the Mediterranean, North Africa, the Middle East and some countries in Asia, including China.
Tendency to break national records
In these areas, meteorological and hydrological services report a number of daily and temperature records that tend to break national records. Confirmation will be made in the WTO’s State of the Global Climate report.
Preliminary data from the agency point to the continuation of the trend observed in Julywith historical records of global average temperature.
Extreme episodes include devastating floods and loss of life in some countries, including South Korea, Japan and the northeastern United States.
WMO Secretary General Petteri Taalas points out that in addition to the large impact on human health, the extreme weatherwhich is increasingly frequent, has an impact on ecosystems, economies, agriculture, energy and water supply.
Greenhouse gas emissions
The head of the agency emphasizes that this fact underlines the growing urgency of reduce greenhouse gas emissions “as quickly and deeply as possible”.
Taalas recommends more efforts to help society adjust to the warming trend that is becoming normal.
He remembers it forecasts and warnings to protect lives and livelihoods accompany WTO actions to achieve the goal of bringing early warning systems to all.
