He-Man won’t be returning to our screens anytime soon. According to varietyNetflix finally won’t produce a live-action adaptation of the 80s cartoon Masters of the Universe, and we don’t really know why.
According to some rumors, the budget would be a real problem surrounding the film. 200 million dollars will be allocated to the project for filming scheduled for next February. But the decline in subscriptions in recent months has left investors cold.
The American site accidentally revealed that the platform spent at least $30 million to retain the rights to the brand, as well as the two directors attached to the project – Adam and Aaron Nye – and the main actor Kyle Allen. The amount that goes directly into the bin.
The abandonment is the latest in a long list since the project was announced in 2007. Several studios—from Columbia to Sony through Warner—attempted to develop a new live-action version, to no avail. Several names of directors such as Jon M. Chu and McG have been floated.
But the power of the ancestral skull and almighty force did not allow Prince Adam and Skeletor to return to our screens in flesh and blood…
At the moment we don’t know if the project is really buried or it is back on the market and waiting for a new buyer. Maybe the success of Barbie in the movies — a Mattel toy like Masters of the Universe — will revive some studios.
