Will the Portuguese dub disappear? understand the controversy

At the end of June 2023, a video appeared by YouTuber Felipe Castanhari talking about how artificial intelligence can steal the work of voice actors and finish the portuguese dubbing, all within a few months, as this dubbing function already exists . He explained that in actors’ contracts, for example, Brad Pitt could have a clause authorizing the use of his voice to dub the film into multiple languages.

And indeed, generative AI that creates text, images, video and voice using only existing content has threatened the professional lives of audiobook announcers, voice actors and narrators.

Will the Portuguese dub disappear?

With the Text to Speech (TTS) tool it was already possible to give voice to written texts, but with a more robotic voice, used in assistants such as Alexa and Siri. However, artificial intelligence has added machine learning (machine learning) with which it is possible to compare millions of different voices that identify patterns and generate a cloned voice, not needing a Guilherme Briggs to dub the voice of Henry Cavill, for example example.

There are already platforms like revoicer.com, which offers a hefty amount of voices for a monthly fee of US$27, being immensely cheaper than hiring a voice actor to do the job.

The concern for this technology is so great that about 20 associations and trade unions in Europe, the United States and Latin America have created the United Voices Organization (OVU), under the motto “don’t steal our voice”. The goal is to encourage bills that prevent their voice recordings from being used to train AI without their permission and that impose a human work quota.

In Mexico, a bill has already been introduced that regulates this technology, and in Argentina, there is a law that prohibits anyone without a college degree from providing voice-over and dubbing services. Moreover, according to the OVU in Folha de SĆ£o Paulo, the indiscriminate use of AI can extinguish an “artistic heritage of creativity [ā€¦] that machines cannot createā€.
