Mineiro debuts at 12 together with Peers at the ATP 250

The debut at the ATP 250 in Atlanta, in the United States, marks another very special and historic moment in Marcelo Melo’s career. Taking to the field this Monday (24), the Minas Gerais native will play his 1,000th game on the circuit, in his 17th consecutive season as a professional.
Melo and the Australian John Peers face, in this first round, the Venezuelan Luís David Martinez and the North American Reese Stalder, at 12 (Brasilia time).
Melo’s 1,000th game kicks off the duo’s quick on-field tour. This is the third time the miner will be in Atlanta. It is the tenth tournament for Melo and Peers together in the 2023 season. The partnership stems from a very positive balance on grass, with the ATP 500 title in Halle, Germany, and great performances at Wimbledon, reaching the round of 16 of the Grand Slam, in London, England.
Among active double players, Melo is the first on the circuit to reach 1,000 games. Previously, 13 stunt performers have met and exceeded this milestone.
“I have no words to describe this moment. Another historic milestone in my career. I am very happy to have reached these 1,000 games, which bring so many memories of what I experienced on the circuit,” says Marcelo, who is sponsored by Centauro and BMG, with support from Volvo, Head, Voss and Asics.
In the 999 games played so far, there have been 607 career victories which add up to 37 titles – Brazilian record holder. There are two Grand Slams, nine Masters 1000, as well as 11 ATP 500 and 15 ATP 250. The historic milestone of 600 victories was achieved on his debut at Roland Garros, in the 2023 edition of the Grand Slam, in Paris, France.

He is the most successful doubles player active on the circuit and the biggest winner among Brazilians, number 1 in Brazil in doubles. In those 1,000 matches, he became the record holder for titles, number of wins, Grand Slam appearances, ATP Finals appearances and weeks at the top of the rankings. There are 63 Grand Slams and eight consecutive ATP Finals contests completed in 2020, second with Kubot in 2017.
Melo became world No. 1 in doubles in 2015 and then in 2017. He has the record number of weeks at the top of the ATP rankings – 56, the only Brazilian in history to lead the world rankings in doubles. And it was in the Top 10 for eight consecutive seasons. Together with Kubot, in 2017, he finished the season as the duo number 1 in the world.
In the Grand Slam, Melo also has a second place in London (2013) and a second place (2018) and two semifinals at the US Open. And leads for number of Masters 1000 titles. In Shanghai 2018 he finished ninth, after winning Shanghai (2013 and 2015), Paris (2015 and 2017), Toronto (2016), Cincinnati (2016), Miami (2017) and Madrid (2017).
