Disney +: Canceled twice, this sci-fi comedy is back for a new season

No one disputes its status as a cult series, but Futura can also fall into the category of cursed series. The sci-fi comedy, which debuted on FOX in 1999, is another iconic creation of The Simpsons’ “father” Matt Groening.

This parody series follows pizza delivery boy Steven J. The adventures of Fry, thrown into the future a millennium after being accidentally cryogenized. In order to renew the course of his life, the latter joins the crew of an interstellar supply shuttle, which consists, in particular, of the evil Cyclops Leela, the rogue robot Bender, as well as Professor Hubert Farnsworth, a distant descendant of Fry.

It’s not easy to get through an iconic series like The Simpsons. And yet, Futurama has gradually managed to follow its own path, thanks in particular to its delirious humor, delicious references to classic science fiction, but also to the attention paid to its character development.

Who didn’t wipe away a tear before a heartbreaking episode Jurassic crust, which depicts the unfortunate fate of Fry’s dog after he “moves” into the future? or an episode unification, dedicated to the origin of Lela? And how not to bring the episode Where none of the fans wentTo mark the last official reunion of the cast of the original Star Trek series?

Jurassic Bark, undoubtedly the saddest episode of Futurama

Unfortunately, Futurama’s success is actually a respectability success, not a popular success. And after four seasons, the ax finally fell in 2003 with FOX canceling the show due to lack of sufficient audience.

Just as Star Trek fans in the 1960s tried to prevent the show from being canceled, Futurama fans made their voices heard through forums (social media didn’t exist at the time) to get the series renewed and rebroadcast.

Their efforts eventually paid off, with four television movies airing between 2007 and 2009 – later re-edited to create the fifth season of Futurama. But it wasn’t until 2010 that the program officially returned with a 6th season* It airs on the cable channel Comedy Central.

This cable revival offers a second lease of life to Futurama, a return that fans didn’t get to taste, however, as the program was canceled for a second time in April 2013 at the end of its seventh season.*. A few series have managed to survive their cancellations, but almost none have been able to be repeated a second time…

But it’s not impossible with Futurama, as evidenced by the series’ new return after a ten-year absence! On this date, the program will open a new broadcasting channel from the eighth season* Currently streaming in the US on Hulu and internationally on the Disney+ platform!

* Seasons 6 and 7 of Futurama consist of two parts. However, sometimes these parts are considered a full season, which explains why ten seasons are listed on Disney + and not eight, as we say in this article.
