Batman 3: “Crazy ***”, Tim Burton’s response to Warner’s proposal

In an exclusive interview with Empire magazine, filmmaker Tim Burton explained why he refused to make a Batman 3 movie despite the success of Batman The Challenge.

Batman, the challenge is 30 years old this year! Directed by Tim Burton, we are no longer presenting this film, which was made by Michael Keaton (Bruce Wayne), Danny De Vito (Penguin) and Michelle Pfeiffer (Female Cat), which inspired the aesthetics of the Batman 90s animated series and everything in between. The animated world is overseen by Bruce Tim.

On this anniversary, the filmmaker returned to receive the film with a microphoneEmpire :

Funny to watch because I remember I was told it was “too dark” so I laughed a bit.

Batman, signed by Matt Reeves and released in theaters a few months ago, chooses Gotham’s darkness and aesthetics that are closer to Tim Burton than in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.

It should also be remembered that Tim Burton’s first Batman film with Jack Nicholson grossed $ 411 million worldwide ($ 958 million in inflation), but its sequel. Batman Challenge, “Only” 266.8 million (or 549.78 million adjusted). Warner at the time was very frustrated and thought the problem was from the Gothic world imposed by Tim Burton.

As a result, the studio decides not to update film director Batman to continue the adventures of Batman. Burton has a bit of a bitter memory of this period:

They went in another direction. By the way, this is ridiculous, because I used to say: “But wait, wait a second: do you complain that I am very strange, too dark and breastfeeding on a costume? Go, go crazy! ‘

Burton is referring to the famous “Bats” featured in the Batman Forever bat costume, which will be even more distinctive in Batman and Robin, both directed by Joel Schumacher. These completely optional accessories sparked a lot of talk during the film’s release and left fans disappointed, especially as tones clashed between Forever and Le Défi.

The director of Beetlejuice also clarifies, as if to justify himself: “I’m not just ‘too dark.’

Warner, however, will not be entirely cold with Burton, as the filmmaker will contact in 1993 a film project on Catwoman in which Michelle Pfeiffer is set to resume her role, then in 1997 on the production of a Superman feature film by Nicolas Cage. The first project will last ten years before being written by Pitoff in 2004, and the second, written by Kevin Smith, will be scrapped due to its very high temporary budget.

Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever generates more than Batman The Challenge (336.53 million or 638 adjusted) and Batman and Robin slightly less (238.2 million or 451.5 adjusted). The latter critical and public failure will bury the franchise before Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins in 2005.
