The Lord of the Rings: What is the power of the ring?

“One seal to rule them all, (…) and to bind them in the darkness”, So it is written on the inner and outer contours of the magic object in the middle of the earth, known as the “one ring”. Invented by JRR Tolkien for his literary works The Hobbit And Lord of the RingsOne ring has many mysterious powers.

Whether it is the experience of Frodo, Sam or Smeagol, these forces are mainly shown in two Peter Jackson trilogies that adapt Tolkien’s books, but are described in more detail in the novels. An overview of the obvious forces, then some … more insidious.

• One ring magically adapts its size to the finger of its train because they are both worn by the same different people as Sauron, Tom Bombadil or Bilbo.
• He emits an invisible evil aura that forces those who approach him to possess it.
• Whoever wears it becomes invisible at will.
• One ring surpasses the other rings of power and mentally dominates their holders.
• As long as the ring is worn by a person, he does not age.

The seal has at least 3 other powers represented by very accurate scenes from the books:

In the tenth chapter of Book IV Lord of the RingsSam wears the ring after Arachna Bunag. Then the Hobbit hears two armies of orcs and understands. At this point the narrator explains:

Perhaps the seal gave understanding to languages, especially to the servants of Sauron, its creator, so that if he paid attention, he would understand and translate the meaning himself. The ring, of course, increased its power considerably when it approached the places where it was rigged (…).

Thus, the narrator leaves us free to imagine that the ring makes it possible to understand the language of the orc or possibly other creatures. And obviously some of the power of the artifact arises when Sam, Frodo, and Gollum approach Mordor.

Later, in Book VI (Chapter 1), it appears that the ring bearer appears in a way that is not his, illusion, inspiring terror. Frodo sees Sam as a loot-hungry orc, and Ork sees Sam as “A tall silent form, covered with a shade of gray and erected in front of a flickering light, a sword in one hand, the brightness of which was a sharp pain.”

Chapter 3 of this book, Mount of Doom, implies that the ring speaks for Frodo or prefers Sam’s words: “Go and do not bother me anymore! If you touch me again, you will throw yourself into the fire of fate”.

Sauron created one seal and the others in another era to deceive the rulers of the earth and lead them to evil and darkness. These events will be at the center of the first live series adapted from The Lord of the Rings, planned by Prime Video for the start of the 2022 academic year.
