“And my bow is yours.”

These five little words are the only things that the elf Legolas utters to Frodo the Hobbit in the entire Lord of the Rings (12 hours movie for the long version).

The sequence in question comes in the middle of The Fellowship of the Ring, the first part of the saga directed by Peter Jackson. During the Council of Elrond, when a volunteer is being sought to go and cast the One Ring into Mount Doom, Frodo steps forward and offers to be the one to bear this heavy burden (you can see the understudy of this character elsewhere. Same scene).

It is then, one after the other, that the eight other characters who will eventually make up the Fellowship of the Ring offer to accompany the Hobbit on his long journey. After Gandalf the wizard, it is Aragorn’s turn to swear allegiance to Frodo, then Legolas and Gimli.

“My sword is yours”Thus he promises Isildur’s heir, who is immediately followed by the elf: “And my bow is yours.” And the dwarf suddenly concludes: “And my axe.”

From that point on, as surprising as it may seem given that they would still go far together, Legolas never speaks to Frodo on screen again.

What’s really peculiar is that one doesn’t necessarily notice the saga when one first discovers it (or upon subsequent viewings), but the two characters have virtually no verbal exchange throughout The Lord of the Rings.

However, Frodo will have the opportunity to discuss much more fully with each of the other members of the Fellowship (except Gimli, with whom his dialogues are also very rare).

To shed some light on this strange observation, at the end of the first part, Frodo’s and Legolas’ paths diverge – the former heading south alongside Sam, the latter branching off towards Rohan, accompanied by Aragorn and Gimli – and the two characters do not see each other again until the King’s return.

Notice the virtual absence of dialogue between Legolas and Frodo?
