Messina Denaro is ‘awake and active’ after the surgery

The Cosa Nostra leader had a deterioration in his health

Mafia leader Matteo Messina Denaro is awake and active after undergoing surgery in a hospital in L’Aquila in central Italy on Tuesday (8).

The authorities have not provided details on the operation, but the Cosa Nostra boss, 61, is being treated for a serious colon cancer.

On Tuesday, after his health deteriorated, he was transferred from the maximum security prison in L’Aquila, where he is serving a life sentence in total isolation, to the San Salvatore hospital.

“Matteo Messina Denaro has woken up from the operation, which went very well, and is active”, said the guarantor of the rights of prisoners in Abruzzo, Gianmarco Cifaldi (9).

According to him, the mobster is in intensive care (ICU), a usual measure after “interventions of this type”. It is not yet known how long Messina Denaro will be hospitalized, but his defense claims the need for 24-hour medical monitoring and requests his permanent transfer to hospital.

“We guarantee the right to health with a qualified medical team and all the state bodies that operate in compliance with the Constitution, including myself”, added Cifaldi, denying the claim of the mafioso’s lawyer, Alessandro Cerella, according to which the regime of total isolation, known as “41 bis”, is incompatible with the state of health of his client.

Messina Denaro had been on the run since 1993 and was considered the “boss of bosses” of the Sicilian mafia, but was captured last January in a private hospital in Palermo where he was undergoing chemotherapy. He was Italy’s most wanted criminal and lived in a hideout in the small town of Campobello di Mazara in Sicily. .
