The speaker changes his vote and a lawsuit is filed against Nikolas Ferreira

The Minas Gerais lawmaker had a case open in the council when he was accused of committing the crime of transphobia during a speech on International Women’s Day

The speaker of the federal deputy’s impeachment trial Nicolas Ferreira (PL-MG) on the Ethics Council, Deputy Alessandro Leite (União-SP), changed his vote and decided to close the process. The opinion was approved with a score of 12 votes in favor and 5 against. The Minas Gerais lawmaker had a case pending in the council when he was accused of committing the crime of transphobia during a speech on International Women’s Day.

Reading the report, Alexandre Leite had voted for the continuation of the representation against the deputy from Minas Gerais for lack of parliamentary decorum. He said that in a speech on the chamber rostrum, Nikolas Ferreira contributed to the marginalization and discrimination of trans and transvestite women and had a negative impact on the image of the Parliament in society. According to Leite, the situation was made worse because it took place on International Women’s Day.

However, after the demonstration of deputies against and in favor of the impeachment, Leite voted to demonstrate. This time, by archiving the process and addressing only written censure to the deputy.

What happened that day, albeit with good intentions, was serious, given the scenario of violence we are experiencing, the lack of specific legislation and the Supreme Court is legislating us. Taking all of this into account, I believe that it is not appropriate to bring it forward in the Ethics Council“, he said.

The impeachment request was filed by PSOL, PDT, PSB, PT and PCdoB. On March 8 she, speaking in the House rostrum, she wore a yellow wig and said she “feel like a woman” on International Women’s Day and said that “women are losing their space for men who feel like women”.

Defence

Prior to the reading of the report, Nikolas Ferreira presented his defense and denied having committed a crime, citing that the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) spoke out against opening an investigation as it understood that the statements are covered by parliamentary immunity.

“I think, not only me, but everyone else is free to express their opinions and thoughts,” he said. “We cannot use the Ethics Council to carry out political persecution”He added.

Ferreira also argued that two facts mentioned in the representation occurred before he was elected federal deputy and could not be assessed by the council. The plaintiffs cited a video posted by Nikolas Ferreira criticizing the use of the women’s restroom by transgender people and the failure to recognize the gender of the transgender deputy Duda Salabert (PDT-MG).
