Hercules: Pause at 14 minutes and 39 seconds and take a good look at these two characters

The appearance of Marilyn Monroe in the starry sky, a reference to the legend of Jason, Venus de Milo or even the Karate Kid, a lion skin that looks like two drops of water on Scar’s skin…

Like almost all of the classics from the Disney studio that came out in the 90s (and after), Hercules contains several little signs for fans to find throughout the film.

While there’s plenty more to the 1997 feature film, let’s focus today on an easter egg that you might have missed, given that it’s only on screen for a very short time, and if you don’t know Big Bay Studios well, the reference might not be obvious.

Set in the first part of the film, when Hercules is still a teenager and trying to master his powers by spreading panic in his adoptive village, this little cameo clocks in at exactly 14 minutes and 39 seconds.

As the young hero comes roaring down, dragging a cart of hay, take a good look at the two workers building the marble arch before it’s ruined by Hercules.

These two people are none other than the directors of the film, John Musker and Ron Clements, in the animated versions. There’s also a good chance you’ve already seen them somewhere without realizing it, as they have a habit of making small appearances in almost every feature film:

  • In The Little Mermaid, we can see them at the end, among the wedding guests
  • In Aladdin, they play two natives of Agrabah at the beginning of the film as the crowd watches Jasmine’s new suitor.

  • In Treasure Planet, they take on the features of a robot and an alien sitting on a ladder in a spaceport before Jim Hawkins arrives on the Legacy RLS.
  • In The Princess and the Frog, they are aboard King Triton during a carnival, throwing pearl necklaces into the crowd.
  • Finally, they appear in Wayana in the form of an engraving, on a tapestry
