The Emmy awards ceremony has been postponed to 2024 due to the Hollywood strike

According to the magazine Varietythe change was already expected due to the strike of Hollywood actors and screenwriters, but the official announcement took place this Thursday afternoon, 10.

This is the first time the Emmys have been postponed since 2001, the year of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The list of nominees was announced on July 12. Successiondrama of HBO extensionleads the list in 27 categories, followed by titles such as The Last of Us, The White Lotus AND Ted Lasso.

Understanding the Hollywood strike

The Hollywood film industry faces its biggest strike in 60 years after actors went on strike on July 13.

The Hollywood Actors Union (SAG-AFTRA), which represents more than 160,000 film and television actors, has joined forces with the screenwriters, who have been out of action for more than two months.

The main claims are:

• salary increases;
• a more equal division of profits, especially from streaming values;
• better working conditions;
• rules for the use of contents generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

Productions such as Deadpool 3, gladiator 2, Stranger things AND The Last of Us are among those likely to be affected.

No one knows how long it will take actors’ and writers’ unions to strike a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the employers’ association that represents Hollywood studios and streaming platforms in collective bargaining with entertainment industry unions.

A writers’ strike called in 2007 lasted 100 days, extending through 2008. The longest writers’ strike, in 1988, lasted 153 days.

The last time the actors union had a major strike was in 1980, which lasted more than three months, and focused on charging royalties on the distribution of films on video tape and cable TV.
