Over time, Frances Weber became a specialist in mismatched duets. In 1973, he faced Lino Ventura and Jacques Brel, one as a ruthless killer, the other on the brink of hysteria, in L’Emmerdeur. In 1981, then in 1986, he paired Gérard Depardieu with the King of Obsession, Pierre Richard, in the comedies La Chèvre and Les Fugitives.

In 2003, the director followed this up with “Shut up!”, the story of a meeting in prison between Ruby de Puto, a criminal obsessed with revenge for the murder of his wife, and Quentin de Montargis, a robber. Simple minded.

For this new film duet, Francis Weber calls two impressive actors: Gerard Depardieu, his favorite actor, with whom he makes a film for the fifth time, and Jean Reno, whom he directed eight years earlier in Le Jaguar.

Contrary to all expectations, the role of naivety falls on Depardieu, whose performance surprises the director himself. Together with his partner, the actor continues to beat the chain, but with an almost disturbing innocence and stupidity that breaks all records.

Following Francis Weber’s earlier comedies, Shut up ! It therefore relies on the flawless interpretation of its two stars as well as its comic situations. It’s clear that this mechanism is still working, as there were more than 2 million participants when the film was released.

Shut up ! Francis Weber with Jean Reno, Gerard Depardieu, Andre Dusollier…

Tonight on TMC at 8:50 PM.
