Ecuador: candidate suffers an attack the day after the death of the presidential candidate


Nine days before the general elections, the country is experiencing a period of social and political turmoil.

A candidate for the National Assembly of Ecuador from the 2-17 and 20 alliance was grazed after an attack this Thursday afternoon (10), less than 24 hours after the assassination of candidate Fernando Villavicencio.




According to the Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo, the attack on the candidate Estefany Puente was registered in the city of Quevedo, province of Los Ríos.

The candidate was accompanied by her father and a campaign worker when two men on motorcycles stopped at her car. One of the suspects fired at the vehicle and the bullet went through the windshield, according to the local police report.

The candidate was grazed on the left arm, but there is no risk of death. The case was registered by the State Police and so far no one has been arrested. Security camera footage from the area is being reviewed for suspects.

Ecuador is experiencing a period of crisis nine days before the general elections and this is the second attack against politicians in the country. Fernando Villavicencio, presidential candidate of Ecuador, was assassinated this Wednesday (09). He was shot three times in the head after leaving a political meeting in the capital Quito. Villavicencio was ranked 5th in a poll released on Tuesday (08).

A criminal faction in the country, known as “Los Lobos”, claimed responsibility for the assassination on Thursday (10). In a video posted on social network X – formerly Twitter – members of the group appear hooded and armed with firearms, threatening another candidate.
