Palmeiras meet Cruzeiro years after ‘relegated’ opponent; remember what has changed

Verdão receives Raposa this Monday (14), at Allianz Parque, for the 19th round of Brasileirão-2023

Palmeiras has an appointment this Monday 14, which marks the reunification with an opponent they hadn’t faced for almost four years: Cruzeiro. The match, for the 19th round of the Brasileirão, scheduled for 7pm at the Allianz Parque, pits Verdão face-to-face with one of their historic rivals, architect of relegation in 2019. Since then, a lot has changed in and out of the field.

The last time Alviverde and Raposa met was on December 8, 2019, for the last round of that year’s Brasileirão. The arrived Minas Gerais team needs practically a miracle to get rid of relegation. In addition to winning the game, it was necessary to hope that Ceará would lose against Botafogo.

None of that happened. 2-0 defeat against Palmeiras and Vozão drew 1-1 against Fogão. Result: Cruzeiro in Série B, a division he only left in 2022, returning to play Série A in 2023.

And those who scored the goals scored that day are still at the club today: Zé Rafael and Dudu. But a lot has changed since then. Of the players who came on for Verdão three years and eight months ago, six remain at the Football Academy. In addition to the aforementioned duo, still wearing the Palmeiras Weverton shirt, Marcos Rocha, Luan and Raphael Veiga. Not to mention the assistant Andrey Lopes, “Cebola”, who commanded the team on an interim basis.

Antonio Carlos, Diogo Barbosa, Bruno Henrique. Matheus Fernandes, Lucas Lima, Gabriel Veron and Willian Bigode also represented Alviverde on the pitch that day, but have already left the club. On the bench were Edu Dracena, Deyverson, Jean, Ramires, Victor Luis, Carlos Eduardo and Jailson, also out of the squad.

Meanwhile without meetings, Cruzeiro becomes SAF and is bought by Ronaldo Fenômeno. Palmeiras, on the other hand, has perhaps experienced the period of greatest splendor in its history. In these three years and eight months alone, Verdão has won nine titles: three Paulistas (2020, 2022 and 2023), two Libertadores (2020 and 2021), one Brasileiro (2022), one Copa do Brasil (2022), one Recopa Sul – Americana (2022) and a Brazilian Super Cup (2023).

Abel Ferreira, one of the main leaders of that victorious period, has yet to face Raposa as Alviverde coach. It will be the Portuguese’s first duel against one of the club’s most traditional opponents. In the historical retrospective there are 97 matches, 34 wins for Palmeiras, 28 draws and 35 wins for Cruzeiro. There are 144 goals scored by Verdão and 136 goals scored by Cruzeiro. That is, balanced comparison.

In Brasileirão-2023, seven points separate Raposa, 11th with 24, from Palmeiras, 4th with 31.
