Avatar 3: Release Date, Story, Casting… Everything About James Cameron’s Sequel

Released in theaters on December 14, 2022, Avatar: The Waterway topped the worldwide box office, grossing $2.3 billion. In France, 14.2 million viewers flocked to theaters. After this impressive and fascinating experience of James Cameron, fans are eager to see the 3rd opus!

However, we’ll have to wait until we hear the rest of Jake and Neytiri’s adventures on Pandora!

When is AVATAR 3 coming out?

Don’t worry, you won’t have to wait 13 years as a delay between the first opus and La Voie de l’eau. Avatar 3 will hit theaters on December 17, 2025. Last June, Disney decided to push back the release dates for all the sequels.

Thus, this Episode 3, which was supposed to be released on December 18, 2024, will be released a year later than planned, i.e. 3 to 3 years after Avatar 2. As for Avatar 4, which was supposed to be released on December 16, 2026, it has already been released. Postponed for 3 years! The new date is December 2029.

Opus 5, originally scheduled for December 20, 2028, has also been delayed. The result of the saga will appear on the screens in December 2031!

As of now, Disney has not specified an exact date, but it should be around Christmas time, just like The Way of Water. So we’ll really have to wait until we discover the end of the Nabi saga!

AVATAR 3, what will it be about?

After La Voie de l’eau, Avatar 3’s subtitle should be The Seed Bearer. The work, already filmed, is in post-production. Little is known about the specific plot of this 3rd iteration, but James Cameron and producer Jon Landau are spilling a few little secrets on the subject.

In Avatar 3, the Ash People will be revealed: they will definitely not be a benevolent Na’vi ethnic group unlike the Metkaina and Omakaya we already know. They will be the villains of this new adventure. It was actress Oona Chaplin who was chosen to portray the leader of this volcanic tribe.

“There are good people and bad people. It’s the same on the boat side. People often don’t think of themselves as bad, and it will be the same for Avatar 3. What is the main reason for their evolution? Why have they shifted to what we perceive as bad? There are some factors to consider about we do not know.”Producer John Landau explained.

Based on the events of La Voie de l’eau and how this second opus ended, several predictions can now be made.

Thus, we can assume that Kiri, Grace’s daughter (also played by Sigourney Weaver) will become one of the central characters of the saga. Born in a completely inexplicable way and uniquely sensitive to the spirit of Eiva (the boat deity), he is undoubtedly destined for a particular destiny.

Maybe he will be the one to restore the balance of Pandora, and who – why not? – Will he transplant the tree-house destroyed by the earthlings at the end of the first part (which suits the title of this third film)? As for Loak, the second son of Jake and Neytiri, we can well imagine that he will continue to follow the “way of water”.

There is no doubt that he will become the main figure of the Metkaina clan and the main character of the fourth film, which is being filmed, and the title of which can already be a serious hint: Avatar: Tulkuni Mkhedari (Rider of Tulkun).

Finally, like his father Colonel Quaritch, it’s a safe bet that Spider-Man will become the main antagonist of the saga, and likely a complex and ambiguous character. Torn between his adopted family and his biological origins, we can imagine him oscillating between the light and the dark side, like Kylo Ren in the Star Wars saga.

New Pandora landscapes?

Back in February of last year, the bonus footage for the VOD release of The Way of the Water revealed some images of the new Pandora landscapes we’ll see in Avatar 3 .

The least we can say is that these places will be much less paradise than the first two films, which should be enough to give the saga some additional interest. Also, the antagonistic Na’vi people are a great idea on paper.

“In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive boat examples. In Avatar 3, we’re going to do the opposite.”James Cameron promised.

“There are concerns about overpopulation and dwindling natural resources that make life difficult. However, we don’t want to paint too dark a picture of where our world is going already. Our films are also focused on the idea that we can change the course of things.”Added by John Landau.

Like Dune, Avatar 3 also takes us to the desert regions of Pandora, introducing another local tribe, the Windtraders. These Na’vi live as nomads on the dry lands of the planet.

And it’s not over yet! James Cameron has a lot of ideas and is going to offer us other magnificent landscapes that are still unknown in the next Pandora opus. In episode 5, we also have snowy mountains waiting for us before returning to Earth.

Who will star in AVATAR 3?

Of course, the main characters of the saga will be: Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, and Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana. Big bad Miles Quaritch, played by Stephen Lang, will also be there.

Jake Neythir’s children will also return, except for Nethyam, who died in La Voie de l’eau. So Britannia Dalton (Loak), Trinity Jo-Lee Bliss (Tuck), Sigourney Weaver (Ciri) and Jack Champion (Spider-Man) will return.

Michelle Yeoh, Oscar winner for Everything Everywhere at Once, also joins the Avatar family as scientist Karine Moggi.

In turn, David Thewlis, who is well known to the public for his role as Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter saga, will play the role of a boat named Peylak. As for Warang, the leader of the Ash tribe, he will be portrayed by actress Oona Chaplin.
