The series “Warrior Nun”, canceled by Netflix after two seasons, will return as a film trilogy thanks to the support of fans. Executive producer Dean English announced Tuesday evening (15/8) that the streaming platform has signed a deal to develop three films based on the comic book character Warrior Nun Areala, created by Ben Dunn and made into a series by Simon Barry.
the film trilogy
Dean English expressed his gratitude to the loyal fans of the series, stating that it was thanks to them that the team never gave up. In a statement posted on a website in support of saving ‘Warrior Nun’, she said: ‘I have to start by thanking all of you loyal fans. It’s because of you and your incredible energy that we keep moving forward to create these stories. You guys really make it all worthwhile. So thank you so much for your continued support. I’m pleased to announce that ‘Warrior Nun’ is returning as a film trilogy. Once again, a film trilogy. Three.”
When giving details, he said that strikes in Hollywood involving actors and writers limited what he could say about films. However, she did indicate that the trilogy could be the start of a “Warrior Nun” expanded universe, which could span movies and TV series following familiar characters.
The announcement that “Warrior Nun” would be returning was made by series creator Simon Barry in June. But when he was preparing to announce the project, strikes hit Hollywood. At the time, he stated that “‘Warrior Nun’ will be back and it will be more epic than you can imagine.” Indeed, it is to be expected that the films will have a bigger budget than the series.
What is “Warrior Nun”
Based on the comic ‘Warrior Nun Areala’, by Ben Dunn, published since 1994 in manga style, the attraction became a rage when it was launched by Netflix three years ago. However, the pandemic delayed production plans for the second year, creating a long interval between episodes, and Netflix neglected its potential by practically giving up promoting it.
The plot revolves around the character of Ava, a dead young woman who is mistakenly resurrected by a magical halo and is convinced that she is joining an order of rebellious novices, trained to deal with supernatural threats. After a final fight against the evil angel and the other creatures of darkness, the situation ended tragically for the heroine, thanks to the series’ habit of ending the seasons with cliffhangers, leaving the fans faced with a situation drama without resolution.
LGBTQIAPN+ storyline
In addition to the plots full of twists and turns – written by Simon Barry, also author of the cult Canadian science fiction series “Continuum” – “Warrior Nun” has been praised for its well-choreographed martial combat and queer atmosphere, which has led to a lesbian romance between the girls two main characters in the last few chapters.
The inclusion of LGBTQIAPN+ characters in a quasi-superhero series was seen as significant, as it represented a welcome change in a genre historically dominated by heteronormative characters. Therefore, the cancellation by Netflix was met with disappointment by many fans, which also explained the strong commitment in the campaigns for the return of the production.
fan mobilization
Upset by the cancellation, fans have mobilized an impressive campaign to revive the series, starting a series of Twitter hashtags, petitions, and even buying billboards in front of Netflix’s headquarters. The persistence has paid off with the official announcement of the return of “Warrior Nun”, although details are still pending.
Even with no release date set for ‘Warrior Nun’ to return, Alba Baptista is expected to return to her starring role, along with other cast members.
European cast
The series also stood out for bringing together a promising group of new actresses, such as the aforementioned Portuguese Alba Baptista (from “Lines of Blood” and engaged to actor Chris Evans, Marvel’s Captain America), in her first role in English, Toya Turner (seen in “Chicago Med”), Lorena Andrea (“House on Elm Lake”), newcomer Kristina Tonteri-Young (who steals scenes with her kung fu) and more experienced Olivia Delcán (from the series Spanish “Vis a Vis” ), in the roles of the young warrior nuns.
In the cast also the Portuguese Joaquim de Almeida (“Fast & Furious 5”), the Dutch Thekla Reuten (“Operation Red Sparrow”), the French Tristán Ulloa (“Terminator: Dark Fate”), the Italian Sylvia De Fanti ( “Medici: Masters of Florence”) and Englishman William Miller (the villain McCreary in “The 100”), in a production which was recorded against the beautiful backdrop of Spain.
