Little fright and a lot of tension; what to expect from “Fale Comigo”, new film by A24

Being under the A24 label has become synonymous with quality for a reason. In recent years, the independent production and distribution house has made low-budget films and positive reviews famous, as happened with Hereditary, The Witch and the recent Death Death Death. Some have gone even further and have been present at important international film awards, such as the Oscar: it was the case of Moonlight, after sun, Minaries, The tragedy of Macbeth and other. One thing that many names have in common is the strong creative freedom that the company grants to its directors. It was no different in Speak with me.

Indeed, the new A24 horror film was bought by the production house at the Sundance Festival earlier this year for distribution in the United States, but did not hesitate to be labeled “A24 horror”. Far from being a bad thing, Speak with me (original title) soon conquered the curiosity of the public and another title: “the best horror of 2023”.

Speak with me tells the story of a group of friends who begin to summon and embody spirits through a supernatural embalmed hand. It’s nothing but a joke, until they break the rules of tradition and suffer the consequences.

OR I’ve seen it before and it tells you what to expect from “new horror from A24”. Obviously all without spoilers!

a lot of authenticity

A few somersaults, but a lot of tension

Backflips have become a widely used resource for scaring the public. What’s easier to protect fear than making someone literally scream in sudden fright?

But whoever thinks that terror comes only from that is wrong and the Phillippou brothers know how to balance the moments of fear with those of suspense, without weighing down the film. I mean, there’s no point in trying to predict who’s behind that door or under that bed… Speak with metension takes hold of the viewer precisely because of the surprising exits.

Immersive atmosphere and sound

If there’s one piece of advice here: don’t wait for the movie to come out on stream and watch it Speak with me at Cinema. Both the setting and the chilling soundtrack deserve to be heard on a cinematic sound system. I guarantee the old horror movie song will get even scarier.

Practical visual effects

Whether as a stylistic choice by Danny and Michael Phillippou or as a way around the low budget, Speak with me it has (almost) no CGI.

Thus, scenes that could be softened with the use of computers, such as moments of violence or possession, become extremely graphic and macabre, making the film even more surprising.

Subtext of mourning and belonging
