Movie quiz: 10 photos, 10 movies!

When we talk about cinematography, it generally refers to all the elements that lead to the visual rendering and aesthetics of a film. Harmonious cooperation between the director and his cinematographer is often necessary for the complete success of the work.

It’s not uncommon for some filmmakers to maintain long-term relationships with certain directors of photography, such as Steven Spielberg and Janusz Kaminski, who have collaborated on dozens of feature films, including Schindler’s List or We’ve Got to Save Private Ryan.

But it also happens that the photograph, in the common sense we give it in everyday life, is a subject as such in certain films. Such was the case, for example, with City of God (1997), a Franco-German Brazilian film directed by Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund, which may have a sequel.

It told the story of a young photographer, as well as the narrator of the film, witnessing the evolution of his neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro into gangs, violence, weapons and drug trafficking.

In a completely different register, the 2002 film also placed photography at the center of the script, starring Robin Williams. This is a photo obsession, in which the actor played the role of Seymour Cy Parrish, employed in a photo development laboratory, and therefore accustomed to having the private lives of his neighboring families unfold before his eyes. Until one of them, the Yorkin family, interests him to the point of obsession, in his eyes the model of the perfect family, at least on the surface…
