International newspapers report Spain’s world title

The press highlighted the unprecedented conquest of the Spaniards over the current European champion

Spain’s first World Cup title made headlines in various newspapers around the world. The 1-0 victory at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney against England, holders of the Women’s Euro Cup, was highlighted by the sports media this Sunday 20.

“We are world champions!” declared Marca, one of Spain’s leading sports dailies.

The newspaper also highlighted Jorge Vilda’s outburst after the headline, You have made many mistakes. Here are 75,000 people defending you. And tomorrow an entire country will take to the streets, published the newspaper which also praised the achievement of Olga Bonmatí, elected Ballon d’Or.

“World champion for the first time,” wrote ‘A Bola’ from Portugal, saying that it took captain Olga Carmona 30 minutes to build the goal that gave the Spanish side the title.

“Spain has been much more aggressive in winning the championship,” said the North American ‘The New York Times’.

Britain’s ‘The Guardian’ wrote: “England’s World Cup run ends with a headache as Spain win their first title.”

France’s Lemonde classified the Spanish title as ‘revenge’, recalling the Spaniards’ elimination at last year’s Euro, when England won 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

In Italy, La Repubblica wrote that “England’s dream was blown away by Carmona”, praising the first-half goal.

The German periodical Tagesschau reported: “Spain won a first-class final, against the fighting spirit of England.”

“The chorus of ‘yes we can’ accompanied the Spaniards in the final stretch of the match until the victory that gave them the title of champion,” wrote Argentina’s Clarín, recalling the feat of the Spanish men’s team, champions of the South African Cup in 2010.

Spain’s victory crowned the unprecedented title of the selection that overcame the internal problems with the Spanish Federation, asking the farewell of coach Jorge Vilda. The players were ignored by the organization, which played the coach, now a women’s world champion.
