This is a film whose release in cinemas was long and noisy. Not because of its subject matter, but because of the closing of cinemas in the middle of the pandemic from 2020 to 2021. When they open again, few spectators turn up, but the designated offender still gets through it with flying colours.
An American production by Tahar Rahim, the Mauritanian VO adapts the memoir written by Mohamedou Ould Slah. The latter has been held at Guantanamo without trial or charge for years after his capture by the US government. Out of power, he finds two unexpected allies: attorney Nancy Hollander and her colleague Terry Duncan. Persisting, the two women will face an insurmountable system in the name of fair justice.
Their polemical complaint, as well as evidence uncovered by the powerful military prosecutor, Lt. Col. Stuart Couch, finally exposes a conspiracy as vast as it is scandalous. An incredible true story of a brutal fight for one man’s rights.
With an AlloCiné score of 4.2/5, Designated Criminal is one of the best films of Tahar Rahim’s career according to the audience, behind Jacques Audiard’s The Prophet, which won 9 Césars, including Best Actor. A role that has inhabited him for many weeks. He also admits to our mic “it was hard to get out of character at first.”
Thanks to his role as Mohamedou Ould Slah, where he expresses himself as well in English as in his mother tongue. Rahim is a hit in France and on the other side of the Atlantic, where he is nominated for the Golden Globes for the first time in 2021. He finally bows to the late Chadwick Boseman, who will receive the title posthumously for his role in The Blues. of Ma Rainey.
Designated Guilty comes out this August 25 on Prime Video and deserves a watch for the story it tells and Tahar Rahim’s intense and moving performance. Jodie Foster, Shailene Woodley and Benedict Cumberbatch also give flawless performances.
