In 2010, Warner Bros. announces a new film project based on the legend of King Arthur, a departure from previous film adaptations of Thomas Malory’s stories.

Crowned with the success of two Sherlock Holmes adventures, director Guy Ritchie was chosen to stage this blockbuster at the crossroads of crooks, crime and botany, and The Lord of the Rings.
In 2014, Warner Bros. decides to create a franchise of six feature films, of which King Arthur: The Legend of Excalibur will be the first installment. But behind the scenes, things are not so clear. The screenplay was built on several successive versions, written by different writers (John Hodge, Joby Harold, David Dobkin, then Lionel Wigram), so that the film was mostly shot live on set.
During the first test screening, Guy Ritchie was disappointed with Annabelle Wallis’ performance. Reluctantly takes away a good part of the story related to his character. Post-production continues: reshoots and the inevitable reshoots are being organized. From the original 3 hour edit, the final version clocks in at 1:50. But Warner continues to write checks in hopes of recouping his expenses after the film is completed.
King Arthur: The Legend of Excalibur It finally hit theaters in 2017. Turned away by audiences, it grossed just $148 million worldwide — a far cry from its $175 million budget and marketing costs estimated at around $80 million. Faced with this bitter defeat, Warner abandoned the franchise idea.
