When it comes to defining the degree, the doubt may arise whether to opt for a short or long-term course; see what to analyze in this situation
All confer a higher education degree and are qualified for a postgraduate course, but, after all, what is the difference between a bachelor’s degree, a graduate and a technologist? The simplest answer is the length of the course. But this is only part of it. Find out what are the similarities and differences between these modes of graduation.
The baccalaureate and graduate are traditional courses in higher education. Both promote a broader view of your chosen area of study, without delving into specific topics. This type of course allows the student to have a wide range of professional services. The difference between them is that graduates with a bachelor’s degree can teach basic education classes (in elementary and high school).
The technologist, on the other hand, is less comprehensive and more profound: he selects a dimension of the desired professional area and unveils all the micro possibilities within that segment. Because of this difference in depth, the profile of students choosing a technology course or a bachelor’s degree can be very different.
The technologist student is usually older, with some market experience or even a bachelor’s degree. Data from the Semesp Institute for 2021 show that 47.7% of students enrolled in public technology courses are between 25 and 59 years old. On the other hand, those enrolled in high school diploma courses tend to come directly from high schools: around 70% of students enrolled in high school diploma courses on the public network are aged up to 24 years.
Duration
The time of graduation is the main difference between the technologist and the baccalaureate or graduate degree. The courses of the first option have an average duration of two to three years. As for the baccalaureate and the degree, the duration varies from four to six years.
This shorter length has gained more fans over the years. According to Instituto Semesp, from 2016 to 2021 there was a 6.6% growth in enrollments in face-to-face technological courses on the public network, and 24.4% in distance courses.
In the private network, growth is much more marked. The number of enrollments in distance technology courses increased by 230%, from 375,000 enrollments in 2016 to over 1.2 million in 2021.
Who are the technical courses suitable for?
Technological courses are a good option for those who have already studied or work in a more general professional field (example: engineering) and want to deepen their knowledge in a specific field (example: plumbing and environmental hygiene) but do not intend to attend a post-graduate course. – graduation on time.
“I have a student who studied administration or psychology and then becomes a technologist in human resources, for example. According to the socio-economic report of the second half of 2023, the percentage of already graduate students attending Fatec is 15%” , explains Esmeralda Oliveira, Paula Souza Center Colleges of Technology (Fatecs) Program Coordinator
This is the case of Jéssica Ferreira Xavier, student of the 6th period of Cosmetics at the Fatec de Diadema. After earning her bachelor’s degree in chemistry and entering the job market in the cosmetics industry, she realized that the extensive knowledge she acquired during her bachelor’s degree was not enough to work in the industry.
“In the baccalaureate we depend a lot on the internships we do during the course to better understand a specific sector. I have not done an internship in the cosmetics area. So, when specific requests from the sector began to arrive, I was very lost”, he vents.
Jessica decided to leave her job and devote herself to studies focused on this specific segment of chemistry, through the technologist course. And contrary to the stereotype that technology courses limit the research area, in June 2023, Jessica took third place in the Brazilian Congress of Cosmetology, with her scientific work on “Microbiological Analysis of Organic Cosmetic Products”.
Although she started the technology with professional goals, after the unexpected result, Jessica intends to continue to advance in the research field.
second degree
If the idea of the second degree is to completely change the field, the high school diploma is usually the best way. After all, as this is a new field of knowledge, it may be important to start with a broader course to segment your business going forward.
The pedagogist Amanda Mazoti obtained her degree in pedagogy in 2020. Three years later, she decided to return to the academic environment: now, to study journalism at the FAM. “My desire has always been to do journalism. However, I didn’t have the economic conditions to pay the monthly fee, even with ProUni and Fies funding”, she says.
The way out was to study pedagogy to get a promotion at the company where he has been working for over six years and finally be able to follow his dream. Since her goal is to understand the different possibilities of journalism in the broad field of communication, she Amanda has opted for a degree. But she is already planning to do a postgraduate course in something more focused on digital media.
Financial Compensation: Who Earns More Bachelor’s or Technologist?
While some baccalaureate courses do not allow students to carry out internships at the beginning or in the middle of the degree course, technological ones facilitate entry into the job market right from the start.
In institutions that adhere to Ecossistema Ânima, for example, technologists also have intermediate certifications, “which favor faster entry into the professional world. -President of Academic Strategies of Ecossistema Ânima.
For Lívia da Silva Ferreira Adate, a student of the 6th period of the Events course at Fatec de Barueri, the decision to become a technologist was to have a theoretical knowledge of the sector in which she has been working since 2007. “I learned a lot in practice. But then the time comes when we realize that we need to broaden our vision of the market”.
This is Livia’s first degree. At the age of 41, mother of a 10-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy, the short course was the most viable option for Lívia, who receives continuous support from teachers and the institution in order to be able to reconcile family and life. Education.
While working in the field of events for more than 10 years, it was in the technologist that the student discovered a new passion in the sector: the master of ceremonies. “Every semester we do some supplementary work at the university, and that’s how I discovered the profession of master of ceremonies. In the end, the work was well appreciated and I started studying more about the subject.”
Can technologists make powders?
For students intending to take a postgraduate course, stricto sensu or lato sensu, both the technologist and the baccalaureate are viable options. Degrees can lead to more academic masters and technological ones to more professional masters, but this is not a rule.
“The important thing is that the interested student seeks information on each course, whether it be a technologist or a bachelor’s degree. Both are very important for the country, and we need more technologists and more graduates to have more young people with higher education than quality that satisfies everyone’s goals and desires”, concludes Lúcia Teixeira, president of Semesp.
