One Piece fans will be amazed! However, Netflix released a video featuring Inaki Godoi, the actor who chose to play Monkey D. Luffy and the author of the cult manga, Eiichiro Oda.
A real event, because the Japanese author spends most of his time in his working studio, without the slightest interview. To preserve anonymity, Oda’s face is also hidden throughout the video (the last shot we have of the latter is from around twenty years ago).
This promotional video allows us to see the immense complicity that binds the two men, and especially Eiichiro Oda’s sudden enthusiasm in receiving Inyaki Godoi.
Their meeting also offers Oda’s studio, a true fantasyland for all One Piece fans, filled with an impressive number of different collectibles (does the mangaka suffer from syllogism?).
During their conversation, the Japanese author reveals that his biggest concern was finding the perfect actor to portray Luffy’s personality. Upon discovering Inaki’s audience, Oda immediately laughed, making sure he finally found Luffy’s interpreter.
Faced with the emotion of a young Mexican actor who confides that this role was somehow meant for him and that he hopes to stick with it for a long time, Eiichiro Oda answers him. “Don’t imagine anyone else but the role (…) you look like the character I drew”.
The video ends with a symbolic gesture, with the manga author dubbing Inaki Godoi and placing Luffy’s straw hat on his head.
The One Piece live-action series is available exclusively on Netflix starting August 31.
