Why do they want to see the series?
It’s no coincidence that One Piece is the best-selling manga in the world. Eiichiro Oda started writing it in 1997. Twenty-six years, 106 volumes, and over 1,000 anime episodes later, the mangaka continues to publish the adventures of his Straw Hat hero. The Japanese author has created a complete and fascinating world of dreams, history (with a capital H), quests, friendship, and family. So many subjects are discussed with precision and a lot of humor.
We follow the monkey d. The journey of Luffy, a young boy with extraordinary powers, whose dream is to become the king of pirates and get hold of One Piece, the legendary treasure that will allow him to be the undisputed master and rule all the blue seas. Together with his crew, which continues to grow in episodes, he will live incredible adventures.
If manga readers and anime viewers have fallen under the spell of this resilient hero, it’s because of her communicative energy, her joy, and her optimism. Characters that make you smile and remind you of your childhood dreams. A theme that will appeal to both adults and children.
Why is One Piece not recommended for your children?
- Even if the world of One Piece is for everyone, we have to distinguish between the manga, the anime, and the live-action adaptation. The first two can be read/watched by young people from the age of 9/10, but this is very different for the Netflix series, which is only recommended from 13 years on the platform. And for good reason.
- The live action isn’t particularly violent (we’re a long way from Game of Thrones), but the images are more rooted in reality than painting, making certain scenes and some characters frightening to the youngest.
- In a flashback to the character, we see, for example, a young Luffy holding a knife to his face to prove to his hero Shank that he is a skilled pirate (which is what will give him his scar). A few shots later, it looks like a horrible sea monster is trying to eat her.

- One Piece season 1 also features fish-men whose appearance can be terrifying. Arlong, their leader, has a saw-like nose reminiscent of sharks. The rest of his crew aren’t pretty either…
- We can also talk about the episode that introduces us to Captain Kuro, a powerful enemy of our team who is gifted with… steel cat claws. The action takes place at night in a palace, in the style of horror movies… Brrr.
- Also need we talk about a clown who can dismember himself? No, it’s better not to…

Even if your teenagers are old enough to watch this Netflix series, there’s nothing better than watching it as a family so you can talk to them about dreams, treasure, and piracy. And maybe share your theories on what One Piece really is…?
