Actor Adam Driver has questioned why smaller studios are able to meet the demands of the Hollywood Actors Union (SAG-AFTRA) during the strike, while larger studios cannot – and still calls them “utopian.” . And to exemplify these major studios, the actor cited Amazon’s Netflix and Prime Video. The speech came during the Venice Film Festival 2023, while Driver promotes the film “Ferrari” with director Michael Mann.
For those in a hurry:
The US actors’ and writers’ strike continues and bans both the filming and participation of union-affiliated artists at events to promote films and series. In the case of “Ferrari,” the feature film team obtained special permission from SAG to continue publicity work on the project, according to the vanity fair.
This permission was not in vain. The union agreed only because Neon and STX International – the film’s financiers – ratified an agreement with SAG-AFTRA, in which they agreed to the demands. These studios, much smaller than the “big” ones mentioned by Adam Driver, are not part of the AMPTP, an association that brings together the biggest studios in Hollywood.
Review by Adam Driver
During the event, the actor said:
Every time a SAG-affiliated actor goes to an event and promotes a film from a company that has signed union terms, it becomes more obvious that these companies are willing to truly support the artists they collaborate with, while other companies don’t. . .
The director of “Ferrari” also spoke on the subject. At the time, Michael Mann said:
We only managed to create Ferrari because we took substantial pay cuts, and that includes me and Adam. It wasn’t a movie made by a major studio, because no major studio was willing to write a check and give it to us. That’s why we can be here, in solidarity with our striking colleagues.
The film
Adam Driver plays Enzo Ferrari in Michael Mann’s film, which follows a year in the life of the Italian racing driver and entrepreneur. The cast also includes a Brazilian actor: Gabriel Leone (“Um Lugar ao Sol” and “Verdades Secretas”), who plays the Spanish driver Alfonso De Portago.
In addition to them, are present in the film: Shailene Woodley (Lina Lardi), Sarah Gadon (Linda Christian), Penélope Cruz (Laura Ferrari) and Jack O’Connell (Peter Collins).
The screenplay, written by Troy Kennedy Martin, is based on the biography “Enzo Ferrari – The Man, The Cars, The Races, The Machine”, written by journalist Brock Yates and published in 1991.
Director Michael Mann has worked on other biographical dramas – for example: “Public Enemies” (2009), “Ali” (2001) and “The Insider” (1999).
