Argentina’s primary data points to a three-way technical draw

The Electoral Justice released this Thursday (31) the official data of the primary elections, also called “Paso” and which serve as a sort of poll, held in Argentina last August 13, which show almost a technical link between the three presidential candidates : the ultra-liberal Javier Milei (Liberty Advances), the centre-right Patricia Bullrich (Together for change) and the centre-left candidate for government Sergio Massa (Union for the Fatherland).

According to the provisional ballot, the so-called “Argentine Jair Bolsonaro” won the presidential primaries, but did not reach 30% of the preferences, obtaining 29.8% of the votes, with a total of 7,352,244.

The “Together for Change” party, in which Bullrich, former minister of Mauricio Macri, defeated Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, mayor of Buenos Aires, amassed 28% (6,895,941 votes) between its two candidates.

However, the “Unione per la Patria”, the government coalition whose candidate for the presidency is the minister of the Economy, added a tenth to the initial tally and remained with 27.28% (6,719,042 votes). .

Of the remaining parties that ran for primaries, only “We do it for our country” by Juan Schiaretti and the “Left Front” have acquired the right to participate in the presidential elections on 22 October.

To be elected, the candidate will need to achieve a 45% lead in the first round. Otherwise, a second round between the top two teams is scheduled for November 19.

According to analysts, forecasts on how the dispute will end are very uncertain, even taking into account that in Paso, out of 36 million eligible to vote, only 25 million voted.
