On September 13, Netflix will present the mini-series Tapie, a project dedicated to the life of a former businessman. Bernard Tapp. Or a life story like no other, which will allow the latter to take up the career of a TV presenter, singer of a TV show, minister of the Republic or even a club president.
Nobody has forgotten the year 1993, which saw the only victory of a French club – in this case Olympique de Marseille – in the Champions League final against Silvio Berlusconi’s Milan. The same year also marked the outbreak of the OM/VA affair, which hastened the downfall of the Tapia empire…
The first extract from the series shows Laurent Lafitte in ‘Boss’ skin, berating his players before kick-off in a classic match against Paris Saint-Germain. Soccer fans will especially recognize Olympians Didier Deschamps, defenders Basile Bol and Marcel Desailly, and German striker Rudi Wöller.
Vital match in Tapie’s eyes
A true epitome of French success, Bernard Tappy held the position of city minister in 1993 during the presidency of François Mitterrand. The national and then European exploits of the Olympique de Marseille offered the perfect launch pad for the businessman’s political ambitions.
Therefore, it cannot be said that the classic OM / PSG had a special flavor for the latter. “I don’t want footballers, I want soldiers” He insists in this extract, reminding his players that this match symbolizes the resistance of the people against the Parisian elite and, by the way, their own position in the spheres of power.
The clip also shows Tapp sitting in the box shouting his instructions over the walkie-talkie to his Belgian coach Raymond Goethals when he doesn’t directly call certain players onto the pitch.
Few of the game’s actions remind us that this classic is remembered more for his killer shots and tackles than for his final score of 3 goals to 1 in favor of Marseille.
The Tapie mini-series is available starting September 13, exclusively on Netflix.
