Galaxy Z Flip 5 features camera improvements in DXOMARK test

Galaxy Z Flip 5 showed improvements over the previous model in the rigorous DXOMARK camera test, even though it retains 12MP

After being introduced a few weeks ago, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 just passed DXOMARK’s rigorous camera test. The apparatus stood out for having made substantial improvements over its predecessor, and established itself as having one of the best optical sets among models with a folding construction.

The device came with a 12MP main camera, along with a 12MP ultrawide camera, with essentially the same specs as the previous model. Galaxy Z Flip 4. Both performed well in the evaluations of the specialized portal, but the lack of the telephoto option meant that images with the closest zoom were captured with less sharpness.

Even so, the device achieved a final score of 127, under the DXOMARK methodology. This means that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 occupies the site’s 45th position and third place among foldable devices — it was second only to the Pixel Fold (28th, with 133 points) and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 (43rd, with 128 points).

Galaxy Z Flip 5 performed well, but with some caveats

One of the points highlighted by the DXOMARK team was the quality of the white balance in the photos, which turned out to be true to the reality of the colors during the day or in dark environments. However, in the second case, some instabilities were found, where the device had difficulty making these adjustments automatically.

Exposure levels came out quite satisfactory in all types of scenes, which made for an interesting experience along with fast and stable autofocus. This can be noticed even in the most demanding scenes, with dark elements and backlighting against a light background.

The level of detail of the images has been considered similar to the one seen on the Galaxy Z Flip 4, which is not surprising considering that we have not had major changes between the sensors of the different generations. However, a noticeable level of noise was perceived in all lighting conditions, especially in the corners of the images.

A few imaging tricks were also noticed, with blending effects on motion-captured elements and strong smoothing in different lighting conditions. Even so, the device was considered a great option for photos of landscapes, food, and other scenes with stationary objects.

Video recording worked well in bright environments

The video portion of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 didn’t disappoint either, with good overall image quality. Stabilization was effective in still or moving scenes, autofocus was fast and efficient, and noise levels were low during the day.

However, some shots were underexposed at night, while unwanted artifacts are seen on human faces.

Below are examples of videos recorded with the Galaxy Z Flip 5, while photos captured by DXOMARK appear on the official website of the company.
