Batman films released after the Tim Burton era marked a failure for the franchise in the 1990s, to the point that George Clooney did not allow his wife to see “Batman and Robin”. and is that the aesthetic change and the most childish tone did not like all the fans.
But one of the things that has caught the most fans’ attention and continues to be criticized to this day is the inclusion of nipples in Batman and Robin costumes.
The pattern behind the nipples in Batman costumes
Now that 2022 marks the 25th anniversary of the premiere of “Batman Forever”, costume designer José Fernández spoke to MEL magazine (June 3) and revealed his inspiration for the controversial heroes’ costumes.
Fernández had already worked on “Batman Returns” (1992) as a trainee and created the Catwoman costume worn by Michelle Pfeiffer. For “Barman Forever”, he made sculptures that were the basis of Batman’s wardrobe.
Commenting on the process he went through and how all the Batman and Robin costumes were invented in both films, Fernandez admitted that adding nipples to the costumes was his idea inspired by the armor worn by the Romans.
The creator of these costumes, worn on the big screen by Val Kilmer, George Clooney and Chris O’Donnell, also admitted that he remembers them only as his inspiration, because he did not know where he “had his head” at the time, but never imagined all the fuss caused by these nipples.
Also the Batgirl outfit almost includes the nipples
He also confessed that for the sequel “Batman and Robin” (1997) it was director Joel Schumacher who decided that the nipples were more prominent in the costumes and even came to design a nipple costume for Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl. However, everyone agreed that it looked naughty, so they decided to remove them last.
Since then, Fernández has continued his career designing sculptures and costumes in Hollywood, working on various Marvel and DC films, such as the one worn by Ben Affleck in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016).
Tim Burton criticized the nipples on the Batman costume
Speaking to Empire magazine on June 7, the director of the Dark Knight’s first two films thought about his films and how he parted ways with Warner Bros. to make a third.
Regarding the change of tone to a more childish and less serious tone with Schumacher, Burton said that “Batman Returns” is not as dark as it was thought at the time and even said ironically that the studio tried to change its vision. as strange. , but at the same time they applied strange things like nipples to the suit.
