The Brazilian president paid tribute to Salvador Allende
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke this Monday (11) on social media on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the military coup in Chile, declaring that “it is the day in which to reaffirm democracy as an essential value for the human being, that without it, what makes us human disappears” “The coup led by Pinochet threw the country into a 17-year dictatorship of torture and death. [Salvador] Allende was its first victim, for the “crime” of trying to make Chile a more developed and more just country,” Lula said.
The Brazilian leader also referred to other Latin American dictatorships: “With the restoration of democracy, in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and in all the countries suffocated by authoritarianism, our people are breathing again.”
“Today is the day to celebrate democracy, honor Allende and repudiate every coup attempt – in Chile, in Brazil, in South America, around the world. And together we make our history.
A story of freedom, of fighting hunger and of fighting against all forms of inequality. A fraternal embrace to the Chilean people”, concluded Lula.
