Current cinema is ‘fragmented and broken’, says Martin Scorsese

Martin Scorsese also spoke about the difficulty of young filmmakers establishing themselves these days

One of the greatest directors in the history of cinema, Martin Scorsese was quite critical of the industry, especially when it comes to films from Marvel. Now, the filmmaker has commented on how the seventh art is “fragmented and broken.”

During an interview with Team, Scorsese went to promote his next film, titled Flower Moon Assassins, and called for a more unified industry. “It’s supposed to be a film culture, you know? But right now everything is somehow fragmented and broken,” she said.

Then the director recalled how, when he was young, people went to cinemas without caring about what was showing: “Not everyone liked musicals. Not everyone liked westerns. Not everyone liked gangster movies. or noirs. But at the time we only went to the cinema and that was what was showing.”

In another moment, Martin Scorsese spoke about the struggles young filmmakers face today against commercial pressures from studios. “Young people who express themselves through moving images will find a way to be seen. But they need to fight, and fight really, really hard, and not be co-opted,” she said.
