Rio samba exponent Marina Iris has released the video of her version of the song “Tô a Bangu”, a song by Arlindo Cruz and Franco that tells an emotional love story between two women. The clip features the performance of her partner, actress and director Luiza Loroza, daughter of fellow actor Serjão Loroza. The plot develops in a succession of disagreements that culminate in an explosive and intense encounter in a samba club.
The paths of Rio’s stations form the scene, passing by the Bar do Adalto, a favorite among samba dancers, and ending at the brand new youth venue, Mureta da Lapa. The composition features a play on words with the names of the neighborhoods and regions of Rio de Janeiro.
“The samba circle is a profound aesthetic and emotional experience: it encompasses all the senses and teaches us to celebrate our memory”, says Marina Iris.
The song is part of the samba singer’s most recent work, “Virada”, available on the main digital platforms. Without neglecting his busy career, evidenced by the albums “Rueira” (2018) and “Voz Bandeira” (2019), this one dedicated to the murdered councilor Marielle Franco, his fourth solo album contains ten songs on romantic relationships and presents a popular language, with a sound faithful to the samba circles that populate the streets and squares of Rio de Janeiro.
The songs were recorded with a well-chosen guest team, including singers Péricles, Diogo Nogueira, Lenine, Moacyr Luz and Renato da Rocinha, as well as singers Amanda Amado, Deborah Vasconcelos and Marcelle Motta. The musical production of the album is by Vitor de Souza, a young emerging instrumentalist in the samba/pagoda scene, and the artistic direction is signed by Marina with the composer and producer Eduardo Familião.
Award-winning trajectory
In 2017, the song “Virada” by Marina Iris was elected “Song of the Year” in a review carried out in the newspaper O Globo. In 2018, the singer performed with the Orquestra Jazz Sinfônica, on the occasion of the celebration of the 60th birthday of the composer Moacyr Luz, at the Memorial da América Latina. In 2022 she won the Alcione Award, from the Secretariat of Culture of Rio de Janeiro, in the “Singer of the Year” category.
In addition to individual works, Marina has signed the artistic direction of some collective works and shows of other samba artists: “ÉPreta”, in 2017 (a project created by the singer and which was a finalist for the Brazilian Music Award in 2018), Canto em Movimento (2022), Canto de Rainha (2023), among others.
