Visual effects workers at Marvel Studios voted unanimously to unify the category with the International Alliance of Motion Picture and Theater Workers (IATSE). The counting of votes took place last Tuesday (12th).
IATSE represents more than 160,000 technicians, craftsmen and workers in the film and television industry.
This is historic and I’m happy to be a part of it. Not only will this fundamentally change the game by increasing the quality of stories through our work, but it will also be a huge step forward in caring for the anonymous individuals who helped build the industry.
Thomas Barnard, visual effects coordinator at Marvel Studios
Union members include set designers, art directors, camera operators, sound and lighting technicians, editors, makeup artists and costume designers.
Today’s count shows that the unprecedented demand for unionization in new sectors of the entertainment industry is very real. I congratulate you [os artistas de efeitos visuais] for his historic victory. Their courage, determination and unity are a beacon to workers not just in visual effects, not just in entertainment, but in every industry in this country and beyond. Enter negotiations with Marvel and Disney with the full support of our 170,000-strong alliance. Your fight is our fight.
Matthew D. Loeb, IATSE International President
Marvel Studios employees initially registered for elections on August 7, and votes were cast and collected between August 21 and September 11. During the count on September 12, all votes were in favor of unionizing with the International Alliance of Film and Stage Workers.
