The success of “Barbie,” directed by Greta Gerwig, boosts its awards prospects. And Warner Bros. confirmed to Variety that the film will be promoted at the next edition of the Oscars in the best original screenplay category.

The film’s original (and creative) story has been one of the most acclaimed elements since it hit the big screen. That puts Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, who co-wrote the film, at the forefront of the original screenplay race, where films like Focus Features’ “The Holdovers” and A24’s “Past Lives” are also expected to compete for the statuette.
Until then, there was speculation about which screenplay category “Barbie” would compete at the Oscars. That’s because the film’s official on-screen credits say “based on Mattel’s ‘Barbie,'” which is a doll made by a toy company, not “previously released material,” as the category defines a suitable proposition.

Gerwig, the first woman to direct a billion-dollar film, was nominated for three Oscars: “Little Women” (2019) for adapted screenplay and “Lady Bird” (2016) for original and directing. She is one of seven women already nominated in the directing category. If nominated in the next edition, she would be the second to be awarded for the second time, after winner Jane Campion for “Attack of the Dogs” (2021).
Variety also confirmed that Ryan Gosling, Ken from “Barbie,” will enter the best supporting actor category. Twice nominated for best actor for “Half Nelson” (2006) and “La La Land” (2016), the actor is one of the comedy highlights in the Greta film. Actress and producer Margot Robbie, aka Barbie, could become the second woman nominated for best film and best acting in the same year.
