Dear Little, the number one German series on the Netflix platform, picks up where its victim’s ordeal ends. Seized, Lena and her daughter Hannah manage to escape before being caught by the police. It’s time for the authorities to investigate the identity of their captor and save the still trapped Jonathan’s life.
Suspense, twists and turns… it’s not enough to say that the series ticks all the boxes for Netflix success. Done well, the story, as horrifying as it is, takes viewers back to the famous stories, but is the story of Dear Little really authentic? Honestly, not at all. It is an adaptation of the novel of the same name written by novelist Romi Hausmann.
However, it is clear that the writer himself wrote about real cases, especially two: the case of Natasha Kampusch, who was kidnapped for 8 years – from 1998 to 2006 – by Wolfgang Priklopil, and the case of Elisabeth Fritzl, who was arrested and Raped his own father for 24 years. These two cases happened in Austria.
A huge true crime fan, Romy Haussmann especially created the character of Hanna with Natasha Kampusch in mind. In an interview with the German Netflix siteHe explains:
“I saw Natasha Kampusch’s TV interview with Günter Jauch in 2006. It was a few weeks after he escaped from the predator. I never forgot that interview because I was so amazed at how this young woman was sitting in the basement after so many years. He was so educated and expressed himself so well. It shows: he learned, had school books and developed a worldview – despite these circumstances at crucial stages of his life..”
“Hannah, who also lives in an isolated environment, studies books intensivelyhe continues. Because he does not know the world, he memorizes its definitions in a dictionary. I found it exciting that they would be released into the world with these definitions. As a reader or now also a viewer, you will notice how theory and practice collide.”
Dear Little is also possible to think of a room, the book written by Emma Donoghue and turned into a successful film, also inspired by the same Austrian story.
