From the brutal battles raging in the dust of New America, by the heroes of Gangs of New York, to the villainous revenge in Goodfellas, in the depths of a dirty and almost empty bar, Martin Scorsese’s rich and long filmography offered us. Many action sequences that still resonate intensely in the history of cinema.
As the legendary filmmaker prepares to unveil a new monument to us – the Western “Killers of the Flower Moon” (in theaters on October 18) – he spoke recently. at the time microphone Feature films that especially inspired him as a viewer.
The one who mentioned the Red Shoes scene to us in 2010 as one of his favorite movies, this time he insisted a lot on the career of Orson Welles, explaining that Citizen Kane had “Exchange for life” Before turning his attention to the director’s other feature film, which is less known to the general public but also very striking in Scorsese’s eyes.
“I think if we look at Welsh’s career we have to focus on Falstaff”he said.
“There are so many different levels to this film. It’s an extraordinary performance that came out of this Shakespeare play. As far as action scenes go, the best fight sequence ever filmed is in Falstaff.
I know people who have studied Braveheart, we have learned a lot ourselves. He is different from Eisenstein or Alexander Nevelli, he is certainly different from Potemkin. There has never been anything like it. “
Directed by Orson Welles in 1966, Falstaff is adapted from William Shakespeare’s play and tells the story of 15th century King Henry IV of England, who is tired of his son Harry losing interest in the kingdom and spending all his time drinking and drinking. A feast in the company of a singular character: the tumultuous Falstaff.
The sequence mentioned by Scorsese occurs in the second part of the film, when Harry decides to go to war in his father’s name against the rebelling Hotspur troops at the Battle of Shrewsbury.

Also discussing other Orson Welles films, as well as the work of King Vidor and Billy Wilder at the Time Microphone, Martin Scorsese explained that he didn’t particularly like the “Top 10” exercise:
“Over the years, I’ve tried to create lists of movies that I personally consider to be my favorites. And then you finally realize that the word “favorite” has several different meanings.
There are movies that have made the biggest impression on us, movies that we just love to watch over and over again, and movies that we watch over and over again that teach us or that offer us new experiences. So they are diverse. And I’m still a little bit against the top 10.”
