One Piece is a particularly ambitious project. Firstly, because the manga was released in 1997 and is not finished.
For nearly 30 years, fans have eagerly followed the adventures of Luffy and the Straw Hat crew in hopes of discovering what Gol D really is. Roger’s Treasure. Hence, over 105 volumes (to date) they will have to adapt the series.
In a recent interview DeadlineThe producers revealed their wishes for the future of One Piece:
“We’re hoping to do 12 seasons, there’s so much material. As of today, there are over 1,080 chapters in the manga. We have a plan with screenwriter Matt Owens, but even if we make it to season six, we won’t even be halfway through the manga.
This can last for years. We’re talking specifically about Season 2 and a little bit about what might happen between Season 3 and Season 6.”
With the announcement that the Netflix series has been renewed for Season 2, the teams will be able to focus on the sequel once the strike ends in Hollywood. If they have a plan for a live-action adaptation, they will have many challenges to overcome.
One piece is expensive. Is it too expensive?
Eighteen million dollars per episode. This is the budget that was allocated to Season 1 of One Piece. An important figure that involves shooting scenes and intensive post-production.
The world imagined by Eiichiro Oda is populated by powers (like Luffy) but also strange creatures (like Bei’s monster in episode 2) that are quite expensive to create.
The writers were also unable to film the 10 episodes written for season 1 due to lack of funds. In the manga, the first part (or saga) ends in Logtown, the town where the pirate king was executed.
Also during this arc, they meet this mysterious character who appears in the post-credits scene. After these mini-adventures, the crew finally heads to the Grand Line to find the treasure.
As we’ll explain here, One Piece was a huge success worldwide, but it wasn’t the tidal wave we were hoping for. As proof, the live-action adaptation was quickly dropped in France by the German production, which worked on word of mouth alone.
Did Netflix manage to make this budget profitable? The question legitimately arises. We don’t know about the second season yet, but we think it will be less important. Although there is more work to be done.
An increasingly rich world
As the sagas progress, the One Piece universe becomes denser, with more characters, more dangers, more strange creatures. But above all, each of them is different. In the second season, the crew will travel to different islands with very different climates. The first lives in permanent winter.
This is where they meet their future teammate, a charming deer who also ate devil fruit. This will undoubtedly be the most expensive character in the second season, and teams have no interest in letting him go, given his popularity with the fans.
Tony Tony Chopper, the cute deer from One Piece!
Then they will have to go to the desert country, where they will encounter the criminal organization Baroque Works, as well as the villain of the season, a large and terrible private person who also possesses the fertile power of the devil. His fight against Luffy is expected to be the highlight of One Piece Season 2.
It’s impossible to customize everything in One Piece
But the writers will have to make a choice, especially if they want to go beyond 12 seasons. If all the sagas are important to the story because they provide important information to the reader, a faithful adaptation of One Piece would be counterproductive and somewhat lacking in consistency.
In the 6th saga entitled Thriller bark For example, in what would logically be the sixth season of the Netflix series, our adventurers find themselves on a boat island populated by zombies and Dracula-inspired characters.
A change in tone that might surprise viewers unfamiliar with the manga unless it airs around Halloween.
As for also the previous river saga, named water sevenIn which there is so much going on that they can’t fit into one season?
It’s impossible to please everyone with a live-action adaptation of One Piece, and the further we get into the adventure, the higher the stakes will be. And if you look at the duration of the series produced by Netflix, the observation is quite simple: they do not exceed 7 seasons (Grace and Frank is the longest to date)…
