Vasco takes the lead twice, Fluminense tries, but the Tricolor’s errors give Cruz-Maltino a 4-2 victory, at Nilton Santos, in the Brasileirão
Those who went to Nilton Santos got to see a beautiful classic in between Vasco and Fluminense, this Saturday. Full of opportunities for both teams and well played, but it was Cruz-Maltino who prevailed and beat Tricolor 4-2, in the 23rd round of the Brazilian championship. Praxedes, Vegetti and Gabriel Pec scored a brace for Colina’s club. On the other end, Marcelo and Lima scored for Laranjeiras’ team.
With this result, Fluminense loses the possibility of touching the league leaders and remains in sixth place, with 38 points, while Vasco has 20 points, in 18th place in the Brasileirão rankings.
1st half
The first few minutes of the game were very sleepy. Both teams exchange a lot of passes to try to score goals. Until one of the attacks, Vasco was happy and took the lead through Praxedes – in the 23rd minute. The goal came at a time when Fluminense was already offering its style of play. After the goal, the Italian team imposes itself even more and puts pressure on Cruz-Maltino. John Kennedy had two great opportunities to put the ball in the net.
2nd half
The dynamics of the final phase has changed completely. After 42 seconds, Marcelo already left the score tied, setting the match on fire. But Vasco does not lower its guard and shortly after takes the lead with Vegetti from a corner. The classic remained intense. Fluminense continues to press and manages to draw again with Lima. From then on Cruz-Maltino closes in and sporadically launches counterattacks, but Vasco’s third goal comes after an error by André and Guga in defence. Gabriel Pec doesn’t miss the opportunity and puts it into the net.
The mistake seems to have affected the spirit of Fluminense. The team spent minutes lost and conceded their fourth goal. Puma Rodríguez crosses from the right, Vegetti moves to the center and Gabriel Pec concludes Cruz-Maltino’s important victory. The Tricolore, in turn, could have lost against the league leaders Botafogo.
Cheerfulness
With this score Vasco finds even more courage to continue in the fight against relegation. The Cruz-Maltina team will still count on the return of fans in the next round, which could be the 12th player to push the players to stay.
Worrying
Fluminense fans are also worried about Jhon Arias. The Colombian came off with a pain in his right ankle and was replaced by Lima in the first half. As usual, you will be re-evaluated by the medical department. But he is worrying, given that the player left the field in pain and also threw a punch on the grass.
Upcoming challenges
Now the teams return mid-week for the 24th round of the Brazilian Championship. On Wednesday, Fluminense will face Maracanã at 9.30pm, while Vasco will face Coritiba on Thursday at 7.00pm with an audience in São Januário.
