Richard Linklater revealed how he made School of Rock ‘for very personal reasons’
One of the great cinema successes of the 2000s, School ofRockreleased on February 13, 2004 in Brazilian cinemas, was not always treated as a project that would work, according to the director Richard Linklater.
During an interview with NME to celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary, Linklater remembered the entire pre-production journey. “I loved working on that movie and I loved Jack and the whole process. But I did it for very personal reasons,” she said.
“When I went into that project, it didn’t seem like a huge success,” the filmmaker continued. “It could have been a really cheesy movie, the way it could have been happening!” Then he also talked about the debut film, Dazed and Confused (1993).
It was really just a first trip to the studio. I learned from that film how to make a film. How to deal with financiers and how to deal with people. It got easier and easier over the years. A big part of the job is communication, setting the tone, and making sure everyone is on board with the film you’re making.
