Watch online today: Will Smith drama deemed ‘most horrible movie ever made’

The 2008 film starring Smith was partially trashed by critics at the time. However, it became a box office hit and you can stream it.

In the early 2000s, Will Smith was one of Hollywood’s biggest guaranteed successes. By the end of the decade, however, his films no longer performed so reliably and were particularly poorly received by critics.

A good example of this is 2008’s Sete Vidas, which only got a 27% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The extremely emotional drama nevertheless became a commercial film.

What is the plot of Seven Lives?

In the film, Smith’s character, Ben Thomas, is tormented by great guilt after causing a car accident that leaves seven dead. He therefore wants to choose seven people to whom he will donate the vital organs of his body. But everything changes when he meets Emily Posa (Rosario Dawnson), because, for the first time, Ben has the chance to be saved.

Some reviews for the drama were incredibly negative at the time. The American journalist and critic AO Scott of the New York Times, for example, wrote: “the most inconceivable and astonishing film, […] and terribly horrible ever done.”

With a budget of $55 million, the Will Smith drama has grossed more than $169 million at the worldwide box office, according to the website Box Office Mojo. Therefore, negative reviews did not stop Sete Vidas from becoming a success.

The film is available on HBO Max.
