“Mexico, 1953
My dear Mr. Diego,
I am writing this letter from a hospital room before being admitted to the operating room. They want me to hurry, but I’m determined to finish before writing, because I don’t want to leave anything unfinished. Especially now that I know what they’re doing. They want to hurt my pride by cutting off my leg. When they told me that an amputation would be necessary, the news didn’t hit me as everyone expected. No, I was already a mutilated woman when I lost you, again, perhaps for the umpteenth time, and I still survived.
I’m not afraid of pain and you know it. It’s almost inherent in my being, even if I confess that I suffered, a lot, when you cheated on me, every time you did it, not only with my sister, but with many other women. How did they let themselves be fooled by you? You think I was furious with Cristina, but today I confess to you that it wasn’t because of her. It was because of me and you. First of all, it’s my fault, because I have never been able to understand what you were looking for and are looking for, what they give you and I couldn’t. Let’s not fool ourselves, Diego, I have given you everything that is humanly possible to offer you and we both know it. But anyway, how the hell can you seduce so many women if you’re such an ugly son of a bitch?
The reason I write to you is not to accuse you of anything other than what we have already accused each other of in this and many other bloody lives. It’s because my leg was cut off (hell, he ended up getting what he wanted). I’ve said that I’ve long considered myself incomplete, but why the hell do they need everyone to know that? Now my fragmentation will be evident to everyone, to you who will see… That’s why I’m telling you before you hear voices. Forgive me for not coming to your house to tell you in person, but given the circumstances and my condition I am not allowed to leave the room, not even use the bathroom. It is not my intention to make you or anyone else feel sorry, and I do not want you to feel guilty. I’m writing to let you know that I will release you, I will amputate you. Be happy and never look for me again. I don’t want to hear from you, I don’t want you to hear from me. If there’s one thing I would want before I die, it would be to not have to see your horrible bastard face wandering around my yard.
That’s all, now I can go get cut with peace of mind.
Goodbye from someone who is madly and vehemently in love with you,
Your Frida”
