For a few years, with the arrival of shows like “The Simpsons” and “Futurama”, it became clear that not all animated series were for children. There are productions that through animation tell stories with mature themes and although they do it in a comic way, the little ones could not understand the full message.
If you’re one of those people who enjoys adult comedy series, here are some of the best shows you can find today.
“Rick and Morty”
Adult Swim was used to the low profile provided by its alternative programming, so the dramatic success of “Rick and Morty” was a big surprise.
This series manages to reconstruct what we usually see in science fiction and adventure stories. The protagonists are not heroes or have a noble mission to fulfill, they are people with many flaws who in most cases use Rick’s science and technology to solve the problems they have caused.
“The Harper House”
Paramount + is developing new content to stay ahead of the competition in the streaming market and so far “The Harper House” is one of the most exciting suggestions for adults.
Created by Brad Neely, this animated series is very reminiscent of the early years of “The Simpsons”, as it includes lovable characters with intricate stories that come together to solve real problems with a quirky sense of humor.
‘American father’
For years, this adult comedy series was in the shadow of “Family Guy”, but fortunately both productions have separated enough to have their own identity.
In more than 250 episodes, American Dad has memorable moments for his fans, with references to pop culture and the problems of American society.
‘South Park‘
Eric, Stan, Kyle and Kenny were a bit stuck in their stories, but their recent pandemic specialty put them back in the fans’ favor.
Of all the series on this list, “South Park” is perhaps the one with the sharpest sense of humor, as they do not hold back when it comes to making fun of celebrities, politicians, nations or even religions.
“Bojack Horseman”
For many fans and critics alike, “Bojack Horseman” is not only one of Netflix ‘s best series, but more of an adult animation series.
This is a horse named Bojack, who was the protagonist of a popular comedy series in the 90’s. Today he is one of the stars who fell from grace, so he is trying to regain his old glory.
Although one might think that it is a simple series, because of the character designs, in reality its story touches on such sensitive topics as depression and alcoholism. Nevertheless, the sense of humor, animation and references to contemporary culture make it a great adult comedy.
“Tuca & Bertie”
Cancellation is not always the end of a series, “Tuca & Bertie” knows this, since after its rejection by Netflix it was recovered by Adult Swim, where it performed better.
His story explores the friendship of two girls who are very different from each other, but also examines the problems that young adults face on a daily basis, such as treatment, rent increases in their apartment or low-paying jobs.
‘Big mouth’
Although aimed at an adult audience, “Big Mouth” shows a different vision for adolescence than is commonly seen in animated series.
It honestly depicts the physical changes that a person experiences during adolescence, as well as all the problems he faces, such as school, parents and love affairs.
“F is for the family”
A series that follows the Murphy family, consisting of Frank, a bad-tempered war veteran, Sue’s wife and their children Kevin, Bill and Maureen.
It takes place in the 1970s, a decade when children believed that they took care of themselves and that it was normal for them to smoke indoors or carry guns at the airport.
“F is for Family” has five seasons so far and stars Laura Dern and Sam Rockwell in its cast.
