Warning, this article contains spoilers for the One Piece manga. If you don’t want to know anything about the live-action Season 2 plot, I suggest you move on.
Season 1 of the live-action adaptation of One Piece is full of easter eggs for fans of the Japanese manga. The opening scene alone reveals several characters that will be of great importance in the rest of the series. In the first minutes of the audience, the pirate king Gol D. To witness Roger’s execution. It is at this point that he reveals to anyone who will listen that he has hidden his treasure somewhere on the Grand Line.
Among the witnesses to this historic scene are some familiar faces: a young Mihawk (the one who beats Zoro), a young Shanks, a future Marine, who we also see in the post-credits scene… those who are most observant will also have. He noticed a man wearing a green cape who would play a pivotal role in Luffy’s life.
The camera also takes time to linger on a few other faces in the crowd. Like this woman in about 2:30 minutes. We can see him next to Shanks. And it didn’t get fans to react: Is this character important in One Piece? If so, who is he? For some, the answer is pretty simple: It’s Crocodile, the one who will be the big bad in the live-action second season.
The crocodile has a troubled past
In the manga, Luffy and his crew go to the Grand Line in search of One Piece. Along the way, they meet Vivi, a princess of the Kingdom of Alabasta, a captive of the Civil War. A young woman discovers that Big Private Crocodile is secretly planning with his organization Baroque Works (which we learned about in the first season).
You should know an interesting fact: a crocodile is a man. It has suna suna no mi, sand fruit. Its body is made of sand, and it can absorb water with its hands (thereby dehydrating an enemy if necessary). But why do some fans think that the pirate and the woman from the first episode are the same person? This echoes a persistent theory about his past.
In chapter 537 of the manga and episode 438 of the anime, Luffy meets a very interesting character: Emporio Ivankov, a transvestite who ate hormone fetuses. She has a special power: she can transform a man into a woman… and vice versa.
During this arc, readers learn that Ivankov knows the crocodile’s best-kept secret. If we still don’t know what that is, the meaning is pretty clear: while he was a fearsome pirate…. The crocodile was a woman.
And his presence in the first live-action scene of One Piece would make sense, since in Chapter 0 of the manga, it seems that Crocodile is also Gol D. Witness Roger’s execution (we see him from behind, so fans aren’t 100% sure…).
And you, what do you think about this theory?
