It’s been 4 years since we last saw the Traore siblings on our screens. Kerry James and Leila Sy return to Les Banlieusards in this sequel, released online on Netflix on September 27.
The two directors set up cameras in the town of Bois-l’Abbe, Champigny-sur-Marne, to tell the adventures of Demba, Sulaiman (Jame Diangana) and Numouke (Bakari Diombera), which are summarized here:
Escaping their daily lives of betrayal, revenge and violence in the suburbs of Paris, the Traore brothers continue to fight for a better future.
In Banlieusards 2, the rapper tightens his writing tone and focuses on the Big Brother character he plays. After approaching death and leaving the street and its traffic for retraining, his past quickly catches up with him.
While Suleiman questions his role as a lawyer, the youngest of the family is encouraged by his school teachers to get back on track.
The teams filmed part of Banlieusards 2 on the Isle of Gore in Senegal for an exciting and colorful sequence that was especially close to Carrie James.
Although the first part was among the most watched films on the platform in France in 2019, will Banlieusards 2 also do better? The first audience seemed to be divided on the question, just days after its release. With a provisional rating of 3.1/5 (which continues to climb), the feature film convinces in some respects and disappoints in others:
“A pleasant surprise, I liked the first one and didn’t expect anything from the sequel, and finally the second one is very good, so I’m looking forward to the third one.” I don’t mind Netflix paying for quality with talented French artists like Kerry James.” (Gloron Laurent)
“Banlieusards 2. Opus in the vein of the first, but less convincing than the original. We tend to overemphasize the pathos and tearful side. three stars.” (deflpard)
“I found this second part more accomplished than the first, which is rare. The movie is attractive. “ (half)
“I like Carrey as a rapper, especially in his early days…Filmmaking is an art and here we are amateurs, clichés with stories that have been repeated for 40 years with the same results… 1 star for the pictures, sounds and shots… Serious work from Carrey as we know Its integrity, but we must stand up…” (LB77)
“Cliché after cliche, the opening scene in the younger brother’s classroom is absolutely the whole movie. It’s a shame because I found 1 quite successful and I’m not into stereotypes. Some script choices make no sense or aren’t explained at all (Mom’s important scene)” (benitor)
“With all these harsh criticisms, the primary purpose of these films is not to entertain you, but to educate you. Also to these young people who sometimes don’t have enough height to realize what machinery they’re being taken in; that these people out there who can’t understand what they’ve never experienced .
Especially those who talk about “clichés” most often. Kerry and Leila highlight everyday life situations but don’t stop there as they also try to offer the keys to a solution.” (Bobby Carlton)
Subscribers who loved the movie have only one thing to look forward to: Suburbs 3. If Netflix proves successful, anything is possible. And the trend is quite good: the second part is currently at the top of the most viewed products on the platform, just two days after its release.
