Famous manufacturer of oils for racing vehicles, Motul demystifies the relationship between the color of new oil and its quality
If anyone tells you that the color of your car’s new lubricating oil has anything to do with its quality, know that they are not correct. This is guaranteed by Motul, a famous French brand of lubricants, which has always participated in international competitions, such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
With the aim of combating misinformation and helping consumers in purchasing engine oil, Motul – a French multinational specialized in high-tech lubricants and fluids – clarifies a very common misunderstanding regarding the product: assuming that the color of New oil is intrinsically linked to its quality and performance.
One point that may confuse the buyer is the wide range of colors of new oil. Contrary to popular belief, color variations are normal and expected. “These differences can be attributed to natural changes in the raw materials used to manufacture the product,” explains Caio Freitas, applications engineer at Motul.
While most are amber in color, some new oils may have a different color, such as red, blue, or green, due to the addition of dyes. “Importantly, these dyes serve a single purpose: identification and visual differentiation, with no impact on the performance or quality of the oil,” says Freitas.
Color has no relationship to performance, quality or durability
When no colorants are added, it is completely normal for the oil to vary in amber hue, from lightest to darkest. To simplify things, there is a standard, ASTM D1500, which defines and summarizes a color scale. This standard is used for production control purposes only and does not define the performance or life of the oil.
“Motul would like to emphasize that the color of the new oil and its variations have absolutely no relationship with its performance, quality or durability,” emphasizes Freitas. “Evaluating the quality of an oil based on color is a mistake that the company is committed to clarifying to ensure consumers make informed choices to take better care of their vehicles.”
Continuing with its mission to combat the errors that exist in the automotive market with clear information for industry enthusiasts and drivers in general, Motul is making more content like this available on its Instagram, website and brand podcast, Motul Cast.
