U2’s debut at the Las Vegas Sphere is a revolution in the concert experience

Irish band U2 debuted at the Las Vegas Sphere, a dome-shaped arena with more than a million LEDs, with a show Friday night (9/29) from which several excerpts went viral on social media. Audiences and critics were amazed by the look of the show, which marks the start of a series of performances by the band at the venue until the end of December. Tickets still available start at US$400, around R$2,000.

Sensory revolution

The Las Vegas Sphere is 112 meters high and 156 meters wide, and has 360-degree projection on the oval walls and ceiling, placing the audience at the center of the show’s stage. It is no coincidence that its inauguration was one of the most anticipated innovations in the entertainment sector this year. And the idea that it would revolutionize the experience of going to fashion shows was fully satisfied.

With an investment of $2.3 billion (approximately R$11 billion), The Sphere signals significant changes for the large events and festivals market. The arena has 18,600 seats, 166,000 speakers and a 16k definition screen extended by almost 15,000 square meters of LEDs, which almost entirely cover the interior. Sphere Entertainment Company, led by businessman James Dolan, is responsible for the space, which will also host NBA games and UFC fights.

The videos circulating on social media highlight the band’s daring performances in realistic scenarios, defined by the New York Times as “gigantic and hallucinating”.

“If you’ve ever been to a show and thought you were seeing a highly produced show, forget it. This is unlike anything I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot,” wrote one X (formerly Twitter) user in attendance at the show. Some people also reported dizziness, like sensory bombardment, but Katy Perry, who went to the concert with Orlando Bloom, showed the charm of someone who would like to perform her next show there.
