Russian tennis player Veronika Kudermetova, world number 19, won the WTA 500 title in Tokyo, Japan in the early hours of this Sunday, a hard court event with a prize pool of $789,000.

She defeated the second favorite and fourth in the world, the American Jessica Pegula, by 2 sets to 0 with scores of 7/5 6/1 after 1h24min of duration on the stage of the 2021 Olympic Games.

This is the second achievement in the tennis player’s career, the first in two and a half years after winning the trophy on the green clay of Charleston, in the United States.

Kudermetova had a remarkable week in which she beat Poland’s Iga Swiatek for the first time, who was a starter with crushing defeats in previous matches.

The Russian will overtake Beatriz Haddad Maia in the rankings and will be 16th in the standings.
