When we think of Disney, Mickey is usually the first character that comes to mind, his silhouette is the mascot of the legendary studio. And when we think of the mouse in question, we think of this amazing character who rocked our childhood and who has nothing wrong and yet…
As Polygon and Fortress of Solitude remind us, there really is a version of Mickey that can shock regular people: in a dark short film from 1995, Mickey loses his mind, the latter transforms into a monster after a lobotomy!
The 7-minute short follows Mickey as he tries to earn enough money to take Minnie on a luxury cruise: a promise accidentally made after she forgets their anniversary. However, the means by which he tries to obtain the money are controversial and he eventually regrets his decision. He is unwittingly enlisted as a test subject for a mad scientist’s disgusting experiment that swaps his brain with a Frankenstein-type monster.
Mickey loses his mind It is the first short film centered on the character to be released in theaters. Designed to attract new viewers, it was also supposed to be released before 101 Dalmatians, but the idea was quickly abandoned and the short film was replaced with trailers for upcoming Disney projects. However, some cinemas did not get the message in time and eventually showed it anyway.
The Oscar-nominated short film, while modern, quirky and funny, was completely abandoned after losing the award to Wallace & Gromit: Clean Shaven. Its director even left the studio due to the film’s poor reception.
Fortunately for fans and unfortunately for the studio, which is still trying to hide it, you can see the film in the video accompanying this article!
