The trades plan a 24-hour strike on Tuesday against the state government’s privatization plan; Court orders 100% operation during peak hours
Employees of Metro, Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM) and Sabesp (Companhia de Saneamento Básico do Estado de São Paulo) have planned a joint 24-hour strike for Tuesday 3. The three categories will hold a collective meeting on Monday evening, 2, for a symbolic vote which, according to the trade unionists, should confirm the strike.
The strike is against the government’s privatization projects, which include the subway and state sanitation lines. The unions say they want to discuss these plans more with the company and avoid worsening service. The Tarcísio de Freitas (Republican) administration called the strike “political” and specified that concession projects for the private sector were being discussed.
Which lines should stop?
- Subway lines 1-Blue, 2-Green, 3-Red and 15-Silver must suspend operations, according to union
- The 4-Yellow and 5-Lille metro lines, operated by the private sector, will not be affected
- The union plans to suspend all CPTM public-operated lines: 7-Rubi, 10-Turquoise, 11-Coral, 12-Safira and 13-Jade lines
- On Tuesday, the 8-Diamante and 9-Esmeralda lines will continue to operate because they are managed by the private sector
What will it be like during rush hour?
On Friday 29th, the Regional Labor Court of São Paulo (TRT) issued injunctions against Metrô and CPTM determining the operation of 100% of services during peak hours (from 6:00 to 9:00 and from 16:00 to 7:00 pm) and 80% at other times, with a fine of R$ 500,000 for each union in case of non-compliance. In the case of Sabesp, the percentage of workers who must take action is 85% and the fine is R$100,000.
“The service is of vital importance for the society of São Paulo that moves in Greater São Paulo, since it serves the metro as a ‘backbone’ for the distribution of public transport and, therefore, the precarious activity would also affect many other important branches of society, hospitals, public security, schools, etc., given that car traffic in Capial has already been saturated for a long time,” wrote labor judge Celso Ricardo Peel Furtado de Oliveira.
Will the turnstiles be released?
The opening of the turnstiles was even suggested by the subway workers’ union, but the labor court did not authorize the measure.
Will Sabesp services be affected?
According to the union there will be no interruption to the water supply. On the day of the strike, the employees will organize an event at the company headquarters in the Ponte Pequena district, in the Centro region.
